heading_2_about.jpg

Physical Culture, or Physie (pronounced " fizzy "), is a sport for girls and women from 4 years up which aims to build confidence, good posture, strength, fitness and flexibility through exercise.
Uniquely Australian, the Bjelke-Petersen School of Physical Culture has been involved in the fitness of Australians for well over a century.

The syllabus is updated annually, is performed to modern music and comprises standing and floor exercises, aerobic warm-ups, basic ballet, and modern dance.

Our choreography is age-appropriately designed to teach the relationship of music to movement, rhythm, co-ordination, balance, and musical interpretation.
The Physical Culture year culminates in a series of friendly competitions for both teams and individuals. These are not compulsory, but they do help to foster a club spirit, a sense of belonging, and club loyalty.

The National Junior Finals are held at Olympic Park Sports Centre, Homebush Bay. The prestigious Senior and Ladies National Finals are held each November in the Concert Hall of the Sydney Opera House.

Physical Culture is a marvellous way to develop healthy minds and bodies whilst forming friendships that last a lifetime. Most of all, Bjelke-Petersen Physical Culture is a lot of fun!

Bjelke-Petersen Physical Culture aims to improve general health in Australians by promoting physical fitness and mental wellbeing.

Our motto is mens sana in corpore sano – “a healthy mind in a healthy body”.

The physical benefits of regular exercise are well-known. There are also psychological benefits: enhanced self-esteem and social skills that flow from gaining confidence at an activity and becoming involved in team sport. Physical culture also promotes the development of co-ordination and balance, assisting children with the mental tasks required for academic achievement.

Bjelke-Petersen aims to serve the community, supporting the many non-profit clubs who belong to our association. We keep costs to our members and their teachers low so that physical culture is within the financial reach of every Australian family.

We provide a fun, safe, non-elitist, inexpensive, team-based sport, encouraging people from all communities to participate.

All choreography is designed to develop:

  • strength
  • good posture

Other benefits are development of the following skills, which assist with academic achievement:

  • sequencing
  • fine and gross motor skills
  • left/right discrimination
